  • The mono nitration of toluene results in the formation of a mixture of the ortho, meta, and para isomers of nitro toluene.
  • The presence of the methyl group
    on the aromatic ring facilitates the nitration,but it also increases the ease of oxidation as a side reaction.
  • M-Nitro toluene does not have an active methyl group as do the ortho and para isomers.
  • The toxic effects of the mono nitro toluene are similar to, but less pronounced than, those described for nitrobenzene.
  • The toxicity of alkyl nitroben-zenes decrease with an increasing number of alkyl groups and increases with an increasing number of nitro groups.
  • The mononitrotoluenes represent moderatefire hazards when exposed to sheat or flame.
  • Para-nitrotoluene (PNT), as produced, is in the form of pale yellow rhombic crystals.
  • It is non-hygroscopic, noncorrosive and exhibits good storage life.
  • Meta-nitrotoluene (MNT) is a pale yellow-green liquid as manufactured.
  • Color is fairly stable, but will discolor upon long exposure to light and air.
  • This discoloration does not affect purity and is important only where final product quality is affected by color.
  • Insoluble in water.
  • Toxic by inhalation and ingestion.
  • Ortho nitrotoluene is a pale yellow liquid with a subtle, characteristic smell, reminiscent of bitter almonds.
