- Gamma-oryznaol, isolated from rice
bran oil, is a naturally occurring mixture of plant chemicals called
sterols and ferulic acid esters.
- Gamma-oryzanol is an oryzayl
alcohol ester of ferulic acid having an antioxidant action.
- Gamma-oryzanol is a mixture of
ferulic acid esters of mainly the phytosterols campesterol,
beta-sitosterol, 24-methyl-cycloartenol and cycloartenol.
- Gamma oryzanol (g-oryzanol) is an
unsaponifiable component of rice oil, composed of several kinds of
ferulic acids and has an effect similar to vitamin E.

such as: reducing plasmacholesterol
increasing testosterone levels,

- Soxhlet extraction method was the
most common technique used in the extraction of lipid from plant and

may
depend on factors such as plant varieties, processing methods
employed, extracting solvent used and ratio of extracting solvent to
bran as well as extracting solvent temperatures.
- Purification and crystallization
of oryzanol can be carried out
using methanol-acetone solvent,
producing a compound with antioxidant properties similar
to
tocopherols.
- Gamma oryzanol is an important
biological anti-oxidant present in rice bran oil in significant
quantities.
- Gamma oryzanol is a mixture of
substances derived from rice bran oil, including sterols and ferulic
acid. It has been approved in Japan for several conditions, including
menopausal symptoms, mild anxiety, stomach upset, and high cholesterol.
- Gamma-oryzanol is effective
against climacteric melancholia and the butyric ester of riboflavin is
also effective in preventing arteriosclerosis.
- Gamma oryzanol intake include
decreasing plasma cholesterol, decreasing platelet aggregation,
decreasing hepatitic cholesterol biosynthesis, increasing fecal bile
acid excretion and decreasing cholesterol absorption. Gamma-oryzanol has
also been used in treatments for nerve imbalance and menopause
disorders.
- Oryzanol emulsions are used as
antioxidants and preservatives for cosmetics and foods and such
emulsions are also effective in preventing colour changes.
- It is known to have anti-itching,
anti-dandruff and anti-aging properties.
- It is effective in trading broad
range of gastrointestinal disorders including stress induced gastric and
duodenal ulcers.
- Oryzanol is sold abroad as an
agent for body building in humans and for the treatment of nerve
imbalance and disorders of menopause.
- In the US, it is widely used as a
sports supplement, as well as for reducing cholesterol.
