- A phosphite is a salt
of phosphorous acid. The phosphite ion is a polyatomic ion with a
phosphorus central atom where phosphorus has an oxidation state of
+3.
- Synthesis of
phosphite esters :- Organophosphorus compounds called phosphite
esters have the formula (RO)3P. They are prepared by reacting
phosphorus trichloride (or phosphorus tribromide) with an alcohol
and a tertiary amine.
- Use in plants :-
Inorganic phosphites have been applied to crops to combat
fungus-like pathogens of the order Oomycetes.
- A clear colorless
liquid with a strong foul odor. Flash point 99°F. Denser than water
and insoluble in water. Vapors heavier than air. Used to make other
chemicals.
- Injecting phosphite is
most effective in spring, summer and autumn on warm sunny
mornings.Avoid injecting on days over 30 °C. Repeat injection every
3 to 5 years as required.
- Phosphite is an
environmentally friendly and highly effective fungicide used to
fight Phytophthora dieback. Research has shown
that Phosphite increases a plants resistance to the disease and
thereby prevents the plant or tree from dying.
- Phosphite is Highly
Water Soluble, and when Applied to Plants is Quickly Absorbed by
Leaves, Roots and Branches
- Once in Plants, it is
extremely mobile, exhibiting "Symplastic ambimobility", meaning that
it is uniquely able to move in both xylem and phloem
- Years Of use in
Agricultural and Horticultural Settings have shown that foliar
applications of Phosphie improves seedling growth, bud formation,
blossoming, fruit set and plant vigor.
- On golf courses,
phosphite improves turf Quality and promotes overall growth.
Applications of Phosphite to turf also Significantly Reduce Summer
Stress.
- Advantages :-
Effective control of Phytophthora,Downy Mildew and Pythium, as well
as other diseases, Increased production of the natural fungicides (phytoalexins)
effectively providing organic disease control, Multiple sites
of action inhibiting the development of phosphite resistant strains,
Low environmental toxicity, safer than aspirin
- Benefits on treated
crops :- Rapid uptake, compared with conventional phosphates,
Controlled release of phosphorus through various growth stages of
the crop, Enhanced plant and root development, Better yields and
fruit quality, Improved plant health
- Phosphites are
extensively used as secondary antioxidants in
manufacture of various polymers and synthetic rubbers to improve
colour, processing, heat and UV stability.
- Phosphites find
application in manufacture and processing of a wide range of
Polymers, Styrenics, Engineering Thermoplastics, Synthetic Rubber
such as Polyolefins ,ABS, SBR, PBR, NBR, PVC, Epoxies,
Polyurethanes, Adhesives, Coatings, PVC Sheets / Films, PET, Nylon .
- Phosphites are
primarily used as Process Stabilizers to prevent the decomposition
of polymers during processing. Indirectly they help in long-term
stability of the polymer and minimize the extent of degradation of
the polymer during processing.
