- Polyvinyl butyral (or PVB) is a resin
usually used for applications that require strong binding, optical
clarity, adhesion to many surfaces, toughness and flexibility.
- It is prepared from polyvinyl alcohol by
reaction with butyraldehyde. The major application is laminated
safety glass for automobile windshields.
- Tradenames for PVB-films include
GlasNovations, Butacite, Saflex, S-Lec, and Trosifol.
- In the structure of PVB resin, there are
three functional groups: butyral, hydroxyl and acetyl group.
- Polyvinyl acetates with different
molecular weights serve as the starting materials for the production
of Mowital.
- Polyvinyl alcohols (PVA) are produced from
polyvinyl acetates via transesterification. The reaction of the
aqueous polyvinyl alcohol solution with butyraldehyde in the
presence of small amounts of mineral acid yields polyvinyl butyral.
- PVB is compatible with phthalate ester,
phosphate ester, fatty ester, glycol derivatives and many other
plasticizers.
- The thermoforming and coating
characteristics of PVB are excellent. And, combining with
plasticizers and other resins can further modify its performance .
- The best-known PVB resin application for
metal paints is "wash primer". It is widely used on a variety of
metal surfaces, such as storage tank, ship, airplane, bridge, dam
lock, electronic appliances and etc.
- PVB is a 80-year-old product. It has been
the dominant interlayer material since the late 1930s. It is
currently manufactured and marketed by a number of companies
worldwide, including DuPont (Wilmington, Delaware, USA) ("Butacite"-brand
PVB), Solutia (St. Louis, Missouri, USA) (Saflex-brand PVB), Kuraray
Europe GmbH (Frankfurt, Germany) ("Trosifol"-brand PVB and "Mowital
/ Pioloform" for powdered PVB resins), and Sekisui (Kyoto, Japan)
("S-Lec" brand PVB film and powdered PVB resins).
- The market for laminated glass products is
a mature one, and relatively stagnant. With only minor
modifications, the PVB interlayer sold today is essentially
identical to the PVB sold 30 years ago.
- Since its introduction in 1938, the
worldwide market for PVB interlayer has been dominated by a handful
of large chemical concerns.
