- The triglyceride triacetin, also known as 1,2,3-triacetoxypropane or
glycerine triacetate, is used for imparting plasticity and flow to
laminating resins, particularly at low temperatures.
- It is mainly used as a plasticizer for the bonding of cellulose
triacetate fibers in cigarette filters, as a hardening agent
in brick manufacturing, and as a solvent in textile dyes, antibiotics,
adhesives, and perfumes
- The esterification reaction is equilibrium limite,the application of
areactive distillation where reaction and separation occur at the same
time, is an attractive alternative to over come the thermodynamic
equilibrium limitations, thus improving the Trisacetin production
process
- Glycerol is a very good raw material for the process called
acetylating as in this process, especially when carried out in reactive
distillation
column, it is reported that about 99% conversion of glycerol into
triacetin is observed.
- Further, the use of reactive distillation reduces operating cost and
capital investment
- Triacetin is also approved as GRAS i.e. Generally Recognized As Safe
by the Food and Drug Association (FDA).
- Among the end-use industry segments, the tobacco industry segment is
accounted for highest share in terms of revenue followed by food
industry and pharmaceutical industry respectively.
