- Vinasse has
variable chemical composition, which depends mainly on the raw
material used in the bioethanol
production , and its main features are dark brown color, acidic
pH (3.5–5.0), and high temperature (80–100∘C), organic matter
concentration (COD 50–150 g/L), and salinity (K, Ca, and Mg)
- The primary
organic and inorganic chemical components of vinasse are
proteins, organic acids, amino acids, unfermented carbohydrates,
vitamins, and minerals
- On average to
produce one liter of alcohol 13 liters of vinasse is produced.
This value ranges from 10 to 15 liters, depending on cane
quality and the industrial process
- Vinasse
composition is analysed and documented
- Vinasse can be
used as an organic fertilizer
- Biochemical
Oxygen Demand (BOD, also called Biological Oxygen Demand) is the
amount of dissolved oxygen needed (i.e. demanded) by aerobic
biological organisms to break down organic material present in a
given water sample at certain temperature over a specific time
period.
- Vinasse
wastewater, which is a suitable feedstock for H2 production, is
commonly characterized by a high content of organic acids such
as lactate (HLac) and acetate (HAc).
- The
productivity ratio of methane-vinasse ranged from 5.11 to 15.03
cu ft of methane per cu ft of vinasse digested and that of
methane-ethanol ranged from 61.31 to 180.32 cu ft of methane per
cu ft of ethanol
- About 93% of
vinasse is water, and 75% of dry matter consists of organic
compounds mainly glycerol, ethanol, lactic and acetic acids, and
phenolics
- Evaporation is
used to concentrate the vinasse to be able to combust it in a
boiler
- Some companies
are doing research activities in bio-derived resins such as
Vinasse
