- Sesame seeds are unusually high in oil, around 50% of
the seed weight, compared to 20% seed oil in soybeans. Sesame is
a high value food crop, being harvested both for
whole seed used in baking, and for the cooking oil extracted
from the seed.
- Sesame Seeds are used to add texture and flavor to a
variety of breads, rolls, crackers, and salad dressings
- Sesame has industrial, nutraceutical, and
pharmaceutical uses.

- China is the Largest Producer in the World
- India is the 2nd largest producer in the world.The
major producers are Gujarat, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Andhra
Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh , Maharashtra & Rajasthan.India produces
a wide variety of sesameseeds varying in colour from whit to red
to black, with oil content varying from 40 to 50 %. The white
and black seeds are mainly used for direct consumption by its
addition in several foods and for exports. The brown seeds are
mainly used for oil extraction. These have oil content of around
45-50 %. The white seeds have the desirable nutty taste and are
used for making sweets, baked foods and confectionaries. The
black seeds are used for seasoning and for fries. Hulled seeds
are also used for snack preparation
- Other countries where the seeds are produced: China,
Korea, Russia, Turkey, Mexico, South America and several
countries in Africa.
- Largest Importer is Japan. Egypt, South Korea, USA &
Netherlands import substantial amounts of sesame seeds
