Information Profile @ a
Glance
- Talc is the world’s softest mineral. Although
all talc ores are soft, platy, water repellent and chemically inert, no
two talcs are quite the same.
- Talc is a metamorphic mineral resulting
from the alteration of silicates of magnesium such as pyroxenes,
amphiboles, olivine and other similar minerals.
- Talc is practically insoluble in water and in
weak acids and alkalis. It is neither explosive nor
flammable.
- Talc’s melting point is at 1500°C.
- Talc is used commercially because of its
fragrance retention, luster, purity, softness, and
whiteness.
- Major markets for talc are ceramics, paint,
paper, and plastics.
- A coarse grayish-green talc has been
called soapstone or steatite and has been used for stoves, sinks,
electrical switchboards, etc.
- Talc is used in baby powder, an astringent
powder used for preventing rashes on the area covered by a diaper. Most
tailor's chalk is talc, as is the chalk often used for welding or
metalworking.
- Speciality talc can improve the
performance
of biological wastewater treatment plants.
- The exposed talc is extracted using
shovels.Sorting the different talc ores according to their talc content
and brightness is a key phase of the production process.
- To obtain just the right particle size
distribution curve and top cut for a given application, the techniques
used include compressed air, steam and impact grinding.
- Talc powder is delivered in bags, semi-bulk bags
or in bulk. Increasingly, there is a demand for talc in pellet form or
as a liquid (slurry).
- Micronization significantly
reduced the
particle size of the talc powder, namely from MMADs ranging from 6.0 to
6.9 μm in baby powder to 2.7 and 3.2 μm in the micronized talc used in
the NTP study.
- The U.S. Food and Drug
Administration(FDA)considers non-asbestiform talc, that is talc which
DOES NOT contain carcinogenic asbestos fibers, to be Generally
Recognized As Safe(GRAS) for use in cosmetics.
- Present annual world talc production is about
5.5 million tonnes, extracted from some 250 deposits scattered across
the globe.
- Production of talc is an approximately $100
million per year industry in the U.S.
- Canada remained the major destination for U.S.
talc exports, accounting for about 45% of the tonnage.
-
Finland is the biggest talc
producer in Europe, and also a significant talc
exporter. |
