Information Profile @ a
Glance
- TAMIFLU (TAM-ih-flew) is a medicine to
treat flu (infection caused by influenza virus). It belongs to a group
of medicines called neuraminidase inhibitors. These medications attack
the influenza virus and prevent it from spreading.
- Chemists say that 13 grams of star
anise could produce 1.3 grams of shikimic acid, which then could be used
to make 10 Tamiflu capsules, the amount required to treat one person.
Thus, one ton of shikimic acid could treat 770,000 people.
-
In 1996 Roche
acquired the worldwide rights to develop and market the drug from
Gilead Sciences, South San Francisco.
-
Tamiflu was launched in
North America (US and Canada) and Switzerland during 1999/2000. In all
key European markets, it was launched by 2002/2003.
-
Over 33 million patients
have been treated with Tamiflu in about 80 countries worldwide including
United States, Japan, Canada, Australia, the EU, Switzerland and Latin
America.
-
Tamiflu is patent
protected until 2016; the patent is owned by Gilead.
- The cost of a box of Tamiflu in Hong Kong,
350 km southeast of Gulong, has gone from about US$25 to as much as
US$130.
- A report in the China Daily states that
the price of star anise had almost doubled.
- The cost
of shikimic acid in China rose from $40 to over $400 per kilo.
- Potential sources of shikimic acid
reportedly considered are cinchona bark (Cinchona spp., Rubiaceae, source of
quinic acid, a precursor of shikimic acid), ginkgo trees (Ginkgo biloba
L., Ginkgoaceae), and the needles of giant sequoias.
