- Bauxite residue, also referred to as ‘red mud’,is the by-product of
the Bayer process – an industrial
chemical process for refining aluminum-containing ores
in alumina, the raw material used to
produce aluminum metal. - The properties of bauxite residues are
determined by the type of the bauxite and the Bayer process. The
technology and operating procedures at specific refineries will affect
the water content and pH value of the material being discharged

2012, Globally the total production of red mud was more than 100 million
tons
- There is the possibility of extraction of the minerals iron ,
rare earth elements, titanium and the silicates which are found in the
red mud
- Magnetic separation technology should be improved for fine
weak-magnetic material separation
