Information Profile @ a Glance
- Used oil means any oil that has been refined from crude oil,
and any synthetic oil, that has been used and as a result of
such use is contaminated by physical or chemical impurities
- The lubricating oils used by vehicle engines have to be
replaced at least every 20 000 km. This oil used to be dumped,
but now most of it is re-refined and reused. This is done in a
three step process, in which water, solids, lighter oils,
dissolved metals, degraded additives etc. are removed.
- If used oil is sent for disposal, the used oil is subject to
the hazardous waste regulations and a hazardous waste
determination must be made prior to disposal
- Energy Converters essentially clean used oil and used diesel
(with filters) and then blend the
oil/diesel with new fuel. The result is totally cleaned,
precisely blended, water-free fuel that can be used in a diesel
engine, furnace, or other such fueled device.
- One of the best economic options for managing used oil is to
replace or supplement existing heat source with a used
oil-fired furnace
- Cost of equipments vary from USD 40,000 to about 100,000
depending on capacity
- Solvent extraction, an innovative adaptation of existing
crude oil refining technology, is being studied for its
potential to upgrade used oils produced by small-scale oil
treatment facilities.
