  • Voacanga africana (Apocynaceae) is a tropical, evergreen tree that grows up to 30 feet tall with glossy foliage.
  • The bark and seeds of the tree contain iboga alkaloids and have been used in Western Africa as a poison, stimulant, aphrodisiac and psychedelic.
  • Voacanga africana Stapf is an Apocyanaceous plant and has been under active investigation in recent years.
  • There is a latex produced from the tree. An analgesic and the shamans ingest the treebark and roootbark as a brain stimulant and eat the seeds for visionary purposes.
  • Voacanga Africana Root Bark is closely related to both Tabernanthe and Tabernaemontana.
  • The seeds of Voacanga africana contain up to 10% indolealkaloids, and the bark contains about 2%.
  • Tabernanthe iboga (Apocynacea) ibogaine is the most important hallucinogen.
  • Ibogaine is an indole alkaloid first isolated from, and identified as one of the main active ingredients of, Tabernanthe iboga.
