- Aluminum
phosphide is a dark gray or dry, yellow, crystalline solid. Aluminum
phosphide reacts with moisture to give phosphine, a flammable and
poisonous gas. Normally, phosphine will spontaneously ignite upon
contact with air.
- If there is an
excess of water, the phosphine fire will not normally ignite any
surrounding combustible material.
- On contact with water or air, aluminium phosphide
releases phosphine gas, hence it is used as a fumigant to control
rodents, and an
insecticide for agricultural crops.
- Aluminium
phosphide (AlP) is an inorganic compound used as a wide band gap
semiconductor and a fumigant.
- AlP is
used as a rodenticide, insecticide, and fumigant for stored cereal
grains. It is used to kill small verminous mammals such as moles, and
rodents.
- Pressure
fumigation – ie fumigant gases or vapours are produced outside the
intended target area and forced into the area using a pressure pump.
- Diffusion
fumigation – ie fumigant tablets are placed in the target area and the
gas generated. Diffuses through the area.
- The
Manufacturing process of Aluminium Phosphide Aylation, Carboxylation,
Acetylation, Condensation, Cyclization, Dehydration, Halogenation,
Oxidation, Sulfonation, Nitration, Amination.
- Aluminum
phosphide is an inorganic phosphide used to control insects and rodents
in a variety of settings.
- It is
mainly used as an indoor fumigant at crop transport, storage or
processing facilities (or in shipholds, railcars, etc.) for both food
and non-food crops .
- Inhalation causes irritation
of the nose, mouth, throat and respiratory tract. Chest
pains, cough, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, muscle pain and headache,
dizziness and
confusion may occur.
- Ingestion causes stomach
pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, swelling of lips, mouth
and throat. Chest tightness, cough, headache, dizziness, anxiety and
restlessness
may also occur.
