- Copper(I) oxide or
cuprous oxide is the inorganic compound with the formula Cu2O. It is one
of the principal oxides of copper.
- The structural, optical
and electrical properties of as-deposited copper oxides are evaluated,
based on which cuprous oxide is selected as a promising material for
photovoltaic applications
- Cuprous oxide is selected
for the fabrication of p-n homo-junction because it has better
crystallinity, bigger grains, better control over crystal quality and a
direct band gap.
- The most important
methods for the production of Cu2O are by thermal oxidation,
electrodeposition and by sputtering.
- Raw materials namely
copper scrap is available in the form of rejected cables, wires etc,
from electrical industries and borings, clipping and trunings from the
engineering and metal goods industries.
- A new process technology
has been developed at Eltron for producing
valuable reduced metal
oxides of significant commercial value such as Cu2O and ferrites
directly from acidic feed-streams of simple metal salts at room
temperature.
- The essential items of
plant and machinery required for the process are required for the
process are rectifier, brine circulating pumps, filter press,
centrifuge, vacuum oven and electrolytic cells, storage
tanks.
- Cuprous oxide, a
semiconductor material has a direct band gap of about 2 eV. Since it is
a direct band
gap material this imparts higher efficiency especially
when used for light emitting diodes (LED).
- Cu2O is currently
attracting considerable interest in the fields of both condensed matter
physics and material chemistry.
- Cu2O is a prospective
candidate for a low-cost photovoltaic power generator because of its
high optical absorption coe cient and reasonably
good photovoltaic
properties
- Cuprous oxide is an
important ingredient of anti-fouling paints and of fungicidal
compositions used in horticultural operations.
- Cuprous oxide is commonly
used as a pigment, a fungicide, and an antifouling agent for marine
paints.
- Cu2O is a non-
stoichiometic defect p–type semiconductor and its potential for the
design of solar cells have been recognized since 1920.
- The Indian tea industry
is estimated to consume up to 750 tones per cuprous oxide or copper
oxychloride dusts, containing 4 percent, 6 percent or 12 percent
copper.
- Strong demand for marine
paints is holding the market for cuprous oxide steady. Roughly 90% of
cuprous oxide demand is for marine paint application, and its market is
now marginally tight with the price generally hovering at Yen 680
($7.07)-800/kg.
