- Deltamethrin is an
insecticide belonging to the pyrethroid family.
- In its purest form,
deltamethrin is colorless or white to light beige crystals that have no
odor.
- Deltamethrin belongs to
the chemical class of pyrethroids, naturally occurring insecticidal
compounds that are synthesized from chrysanthemum
flowers.
- Deltamethrin is
formulated as solutions, emuIsifiabIe concentrates, flowable powders,
wettable powders, ultra-low volume concentrates, dusts,
aerosols,
granules and concentrated suspension.
- Several analytical
methods have been developed for the qualitative determination of
Deltamethrin residues and formulations, including thin-layer
chromatography, gas chromatography and high-performance liquid
chromatography.
- Deltamethrin is in a
variety of products used to kill a wide range of insects. Deltamethrin
can be formulated in insecticide products as aerosols, sprays, dusts,
granules and wettable powders.
- Deltamethrin is not
likely to evaporate into the air or dissolve easily into
water.
- Deltamethrin is
moderately to highly toxic to fish under laboratory
conditions.
- Deltamethrin is
practically non-toxic to birds when they eat it.
- Deltamethrin plays a key
role in controlling malaria vectors, and is used in the manufacture of
long-lasting insecticidal mosquito nets.
- It is helpful in
eliminating and preventing a wide variety of household pests, especially
spiders, fleas, ticks, carpenter ants, carpenter bees, cockroaches and
bedbugs. Deltamethrin is also one of the primary ingredients in ant
chalk.
- Deltamethrin is used as a
pesticide applied to the foliage of plants and crops as a topical
treatment for pets and farm animals and as a prescription medicine to
treat sea lice infestations on farmed fish.
- Other uses include insect
control for public health concerns, pest control in forestry, pest
control in animal facilities, parasite control on animals, and as a wood
preservative.
- Market growth is also
driven by the use of agrochemicals in the production of biofuels, which
are rapidly gaining in importance over traditional petroleum-based
fuel.
- The market is witnessing
especially high demand for fertilizers and pesticides in developing
nations such as India, China and Brazil and Mexico.
- Deltamethrin is a
broad-spectrum insecticide that has been associated with nervous
system toxicity in laboratory animals and in humans.
