- Dieldrin is a man-made
chemical used as an insecticide.
- Aldrin and dieldrin were
discovered by Julius Hyman. Hyman worked for Velsicol Corporation,
headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee, and helped discover
chlordane.
- Aldrin, dieldrin, and
endrin are cyclodienes made by a chemical process known as the
Diels-Alder reaction, hence their names.
- Dieldrin is an
organochlorine insecticide that is structurally very similar to
Aldrin.
- Dieldrin occurs as white
crystals or tan-coloured flakes, odourless or with mild chemical odour.
- The trade names used for
dieldrin include Alvit, Dieldrix, Octalox, Quintox, and Red
Shield.
- Pure aldrin and dieldrin
are white powders with a mild chemical odor. The less pure commercial
powders have a tan color.
- Dieldrin, a stereoisomer
of endrin, was typically produced by the epoxidation of aldrin with
peracetic or perbenzoic acid.
- Dieldrin was manufactured
by the epoxidation of aldrin. The epoxidation of aldrin was obtained by
reacting it either with a peracid or with hydrogen peroxide and a
tungstic oxide catalyst .
- Water treatment
technologies such as granular activated carbon and reverse osmosis can
reduce levels of aldrin and dieldrin in drinking water
supplies.
- Aldrin and its epoxide
dieldrin are largely used in countries with hot climates, both as
agricultural insecticides and for the control of tsetse fly, the
vector of human and animal trypanosomiasis, and other insects which
are sources of various human and animal diseases.
- Dieldrin, the second most
commonly used agricultural pesticide in the U.S. in the 1960s (after
DDT) and banned in the U.S. in 1987, is an acutely
toxic
carcinogenic and endocrine-disrupting compound.
- Dieldrin can evaporate
slowly from surface water or soil. In the air, dieldrin changes to
photodieldrin within a few days.
- While estimates of
production of aldrin and dieldrin vary, it is probable that their
combined production rose to a peak of about 20 million pounds a year in
the mid-1960s and then declined.
- Aldrin/ dieldrin ranked
second—after DDT— among agricultural chemicals used in the United States
in the 1960s.
