-
Fluvalinate (trade names
include Apistan, Klartan, Minadox) is a synthetic pyrethroid commonly
used to control varroa mites in honey bee colonies.
-
Fluvalinate (sold as
Apistan) is considered a low risk pesticide by the Environmental
Protection Agency.
-
Fluvalinate is slightly
toxic to birds. The acute oral LD50 for fluvalinate in bobwhite quail is
greater than 2510 mg/kg
-
Fluvalinate is of low
persistence, with reported soil half-lives of 6 to 8 days. In sandy
loam, sandy clay and clay soils, fluvalinate degrades under aerobic
conditions with half-lives of 4 to 8 days. Under anaerobic conditions in
sandy loam, its half-life may be 15 days.
-
The original formulation
of fluvalinate (racemic or having multiple forms) had an established
lethal dose that killed 50% of the tested population (LD50) at 65.85
μg/bee for honey bees, which is considered relatively non-toxic.
-
Reports from Italy are
that fluvalinate-resistant mites build up only about half as fast as
nonresistant mites.
-
In the early 1990’s
racemic fluvalinate was replaced with tau-fluvalinate (having a single
form) resulting in a 2-fold increase in toxicity of this material to
honey bees.
