- Glufosinate is a
short name for the ammonium salt, glufosinate-ammonium.
- Glufosinate-ammonium
is a broad-spectrum herbicide, in use in relatively small
quantities since the 1980s.
- Glufosinate ammonium
is the active ingredient in a new non-selective herbicide.
- Glufosinate residues
are readily miscible in water and will not volatilize
significantly due to a low vapor pressure
- It is used to
control a wide range of weeds after the crop emerges or for total
vegetation control on land not used for cultivation.
- Glufosinate is a
natural compound isolated from two species of Streptomyces fungi. It
inhibits the activity of an enzyme, glutamine synthetase, which is
necessary for the production of glutamine and for ammonia
detoxification.
- Glufosinate ammonium
was obtained from Riedel-de Haen.
- Glufosinate-ammonium
is a phosphoruscontaining amino acid derived from a natural toxin
isolated from two species of Streptomyces fungi.
- Glufosinate-ammonium
is a non-selective contact herbicide with systemic action.
- Glufosinate or its
ammonium salt DL-phosphinothricin is an active ingredient in several
nonselective systemic herbicides - Basta, Rely, Finale, Ignite,
Challenge and Liberty.
- It is used on a wide
range of annual and perennial broad-leaved weeds and grasses in
orchards, vineyards, rubber and oil palm plantations, cotton,
soy,
ornamental trees, non-crop land, home gardens, greenhouses, nurseries,
and pre-emergence in vegetables.
- Glufosinate -
ammonium is a non-selective contact herbicide with limited systemic
activity in the aerial parts of treated plants.
- Glufosinate inhibits
the glutamate synthetase enzyme needed for the ammonification of
glutamate to glutamine. This disruption in the production of key amino
acids leads to disruption of the cell membrane, excess ammonium and
death of the cell.
- In Malaysia,
glufosinate ammonium (GLUF) is a commonly used herbicide in oil palm
plantations to control broad-leaved weeds and grasses.
- Glufosinate ammonium
treatment reduced the number and size of lesions in transgenic rice
plants.
- Bayer CropScience is
the major producer of glufosinate-ammonium.
- In China, Zhejiang
Yongnong Chem. Ind. Co., LTD is also producing the herbicide.
- Glufosinate-ammonium
is an active ingredient in several formulated products registered
for
preplant and postemergent control of broadleaf weeds in a variety of
crops and non-crop areas. |
