- Isoproturon is a man-made
chemical used as a herbicide. Isoproturon is a herbicide that can be
harmful to wildlife.
- Isoproturon is a selective
herbicidal active ingredient, belonging to the chemical class of
substituted phenyl ureas.
- Isoproturon is taken up by
the roots and through absorption through the leaves of plants and owes
its action to inhibition of photosynthesis.
- The active substance
isoproturon is prepared by the transamidation of cumylurea with
anhydrous dimethylamine.
- Liquid chromatography with
photodiode array detection (LC–DAD) and liquid chromatography with mass
spectrometry (LC–MS) are two techniques that have been widely used in
monitoring pesticides and their degradation products in the
environment.
- At present, chromatographic
methods [high performance liquid chromatography [HPLC], gas
chromatography [GC], and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry [GC–MS])
represent the traditional analytical and most-common techniques for
herbicide detection.
- Isoproturon is a phenylurea
herbicide that is used in Europe mainly for the control of annual
grasses and broad-leaf weeds in winter cereals.
- Isoproturon is a selective,
systemic herbicide mainly used for cereals, and is regulated by a number
of European rules.
- Isoproturon is mobile in
soil and has been detected in both surface water and groundwater. In
water, it is quite persistent and hydrolyses slowly; the
half-life
is about 30 days.
- Isoproturon is urea
herbicide for use pre and post emergence for the control of annual
grasses and annual broad leaved weeds in winter and spring
wheat,
winter and spring barley, winter rye and triticale.
- Isoproturon may be
determined by separation by reverse-phase high-performance liquid
chromatography followed by ultraviolet or
electrochemical
detection.
- Isoproturon was of low
acute toxicity to mammals, birds, bees, earthworms and fish and has no
lasting or persistent effect on soil microbial function.
- Herbicides play an
important role in agriculture and demand for them is increasing.
- The current use of
isoproturon is explained by the fact that it is a relatively cheap and
easy-to-use herbicide.
- An analyst from UK
mentioned a use of 3,300 tons a year in the United Kingdom, which makes
it the second largest pesticide used in the UK and
an analyst from
France estimated a use of more than 1,000 tons a year in France (in the
top fifteen of plant protection). |
