- Paclobutrazol is a
triazole type plant growth retardant which blocks gibberellin
biosynthesis and are involved in reducing abscisic acid, ethylene
and indole-3-acetic acid while increasing cytokinin levels.
- It can be classified as
the growth retardants, which can be sub-classified as gibberellin
biosynthesis inhibitors or compounds which are not involved
in
inhibiting gibberellin biosynthesis.
- Paclobutrazol is the
active ingredient in Bonzi, Clipper, and Culta. Bon ornamental plant
growth regulator comes as a liquid containing 0.4% active ingredient,
and 99.6% inert ingredients.
- Paclobutrazol, a
relatively new product on the market, is quickly proving to be a great
asset to plant health care.
- Paclobutrazol is used for
two primary reasons: To sustain the health and vitality of trees and as
a supplement to pruning.
- The purpose of
paclobutrazol use is to produce compact plants with denser vegetative
growth. On turf, the material also reduces the frequency of required
mowing.
- China’s plant growth
regulator industry has seen remarkable progress in recent years, showing
show attractive market potential in the future.
- Total output and output
value of plant growth regulators reached 29,962 tonnes and USD256
million respectively in 2009.
- About 60% outuput was
exported in 2009, the ramaining 40% output about 11,776 tonnes was
consumed in domestic.
- Paclobutrazol should be
applied once every three years where pruning needs to be done more
frequently.
- The use of the plant
growth regulators (PGRs) as ‘‘chemical mowing agents’’ was envisioned
many years ago because of the tremendous economic benefits and
additional potential benefits including: improved color, fewer clipping,
deeper roots, fewer seedheads, less time spent in trimming.
- It is very effective at
decreasing the growth rate of trees over a period of athree years making
it a favorable method to reduce maintenance costs such as pruning.
- Paclobutrazol inhibited
growth considerably and contributed to the increase of fruit formation
not only of grapes but also of many other tree species.
- Its role as
anti-gibberellin is considered sufficient for the induction of higher
yield and for improvement of the quality.
