Project at a Glance

Contents on the CD Rom

  • Pretilachlor is one of well known synthetic selective herbicide.
  • Pretilachlor was colourless liquid, and stock solution was prepared freshly in dimethylsulfoxide
    (DMSO) before use.
  • Pretilachlor is used to control annual grasses, broad-leaved weeds and sedges in rice and works by inhibiting cell division.
  • Pretilachlor and quinclorac were introduced for rice weed control at the same time, mainly to control barnyardgrass.
  • It is selective herbicide and it is taken up readily by the hypocotyls, mesocotyls and coleoptiles, and, to a lesser extent, by the roots of
    germinating weeds.
  • Pretilachlor is effective against main annual grasses, broad-leaved weeds and sedges in transplanted and seeded rice, at 1-1.25 kg/ha.
  • Pretilachlor [2–chloro–2,6–diethyl–N–(2–propoxyethyl) acetanilide] is a chloroacetanilide herbicide which is
widely used in rice cultivation for the control of several grasses, broad–leaved weeds and sedges.
  • Pretilachlor is used either as a pre–planting or post–emergence application.
  • In rice pre-planting and in pre-emergence of the weed the mixture of dimethenamid + pretilachlor in flooded soil gave the best results and prevented red rice germination by about 90%.
  • Pretilachlor shows a variable performance in relation to the soil characteristics and weather conditions but its efficacy against the weed does not commonly exceed, on average, 50% of the germinable seeds.
  • A new herbicide Pretilachlor + Safner (Sofit) when applied at 500g per hectare within three days after sowing i.e., before weed emergence, effectively controls weeds in rice nursery.
  • A laboratory experiment was conducted to determine the test species suitable for bioassay of Butachlor and Pretilachlor and a field trial was conducted to study the persistence and mobility of these herbicides in broadcast-seeded wetland rice by determining, through plant bioassay, the amount of herbicide residue from various soil depths and at different times after application.
  • Height of seedlings, length of leaf and coleoptile cells, and α-amylase activities of eight species or varieties of barnyardgrass (Echinochloa) were measured after seeds being treated with pretilachlor.
  • Residues of pretilachlor were
analysed in a gas chromatograph equipped with an electron capture detector.
  • The GW PECs of cinosulfuron and pretilachlor as predicted by both RICEWQ and SWAGW at 1m depth were calculated as the average of the daily concentrations of the pesticides for the whole simulation period in each year.
  • Pretilachlor is registered in many Asian countries, such as India, China and the Philippines.
  • But is not registered in Europe or the US.
  • The global market for pretilachlor is worth around $100m, with the majority of sales made in Asian countries such as China and India.
  • Indeed the majority of manufacturers of the ai are based in India and China, while syngenta targets pretialchlor at asian markets.
  • The withdrawal of pretilachlor in the EU won't have much of an effect on its global sales, which should remain stable over the next few years.
