- Propetamphos is a man-made chemical
used as an insecticide. It is a yellowish oily liquid with a strong
odour. It can be toxic to wildlife.
- The major use of propetamphos is in
the control of household and public health pests, especially
cockroaches, flies, fleas, mosquitoes, clothes moths,
ants and
animal ectoparasites such as mites and lice.
- The use of a multi-capillary liner
with a programmable injector and a CTC large volume autosampler has
shown to provide very low detection limits and produce good quality
data. The inertness of this liner is particularly good for the analysis
of labile organophosphorus pesticides which includes
Propetamphos.
- An analytical method is described
for the determination of the organophosphorus pesticides diazinon and
propetamphos in water and in sewage, at
levels ranging from 0.01-1.0
mg/L. The method involves solid phase extraction using C-18 Bond Elut
cartridges, elution with ether, and solvent change to hexane.
- An analytical method is developed
to allow the monitoring of workers exposed to propetamphos.
E-O-2-isopropylcarbonyl-1-methylvinyl-O-methylethylphosphoram idothioate
has been identified as a human metabolite of propetamphos.
- In high-temperature dyeing
processes propetamphos, diazinon and chlorfenvinphos partition between
the dye liquor and the fibre in ratios which approximate to their
relative water solubility, thus cypermethrin (solubility 0.009mg/l) is
generally present at lower concentrations than
propetamphos
(solubility 110mg/l).
- The toxicological response of field
populations of Lucilia cuprina to propetamphos was correlated to that of
diazinon suggesting that resistance to propetamphos is a direct
consequence of existing diazinon resistance.
- The insecticides, propetamphos 20%
CS, pirimiphos-methyl 50% EC, bifenthrin 25% WP and
alpha-cypermethrin
5% SC, were tested against adult C. lectularius
using a Potter spray tower. The concentrations at which 50% of bed
bugs were either dead or moribund (ED50) for propetamphos and
pirimiphos-methyl.
- Total annual usage is low, and
estimated at 90,000 pounds active ingredient. The typical rate of
dilution varies from 0.5% to 1.0% active ingredient solution.
Propetamphos is applied as a water dilution through a compressed air
sprayer, often with a low pressure hand wand.
