Trichlorfon is an
insecticide that historically has been used to control indoor and
outdoor pests on agricultural, non-agricultural, residential and
commercial sites.

Trichlorfon is a
colorless-to-white or pale yellow, crystalline(sand-like) solid with a
sweet odor. It is an Organophosphate pesticide used to control insects
in forests, vegetable, cotton and animals.

Technical trichlorfon is
a white crystalline solid with a melting point of 75-84 C. Trichlorfon
is soluble in water, dichloromethane , 2-propanol, and toluene, and
nearly
insoluble in n-hexane.

Trichlorfon is
incompatible with alkalis. It is corrosive to black iron and mild steel.
It is corrosive to metals. It is
subject to hydrolysis.

Trichlorfon is a
selective insecticide, meaning that it kills selected insects, but
spares many or most other organisms. Trichlorfon is toxic to target
insects through direct application and by ingestion. In order words, it
works both by contact and stomach poison action.

Trichlorfon was
determined to have low toxicity to honey bees.

Trichlorfon is a
moderately
toxic organophosphate which releases the direct acting
agent DDVP. As with the group of
organophosphate insecticides,
cholinesterase (ChE) inhibition is the mechanism of action.

It was used on a variety
of crops to control insects such as cockroaches, crickets, silverfish,
bedbugs, fleas, cattle grubs,
flies, ticks, leafminers, and
leaf-hoppers.

It was also used on
livestock, domestic settings, greenhouses, and aquatic
environments.

Trichlorfon is seldom
used in production of maize, sweetcorn, brassicas and tomatoes.

Trichlorfon
is used overseas on cattle as a pour-on treatment.

Trichlorfon breaks down,
or degrades, rapidly in aerobic soils, in which it has half-lives
between 1 and 27 days under
nonsterile conditions. Trichlorfon is
stable with a half-life greater than 40 days in sterile soils.

Trichlorfon does not
adsorb strongly to soil particles, is readily soluble in water, and it
is very mobile in soils of
varying textures and organic contents. It
is therefore likely to contaminate groundwater.

Trichlorfon should not
be applied to lime-treated surfaces.
-
Trichlorfon can cause
cholinesterase inhibition in humans; that is, it can overstimulate the
nervous system causing nausea, dizziness, confusion, and at very high
exposures, respiratory paralysis and death.

The trichlorfon
products ranges from 1% baits active ingredient to 98% technical active
ingredient.
-
Approximately 30 kg of
the Trichlorfon veterinary medicine is sold annually.
