Project at a Glance

Contents on the CD Rom

  • Trifluralin is a pre-emergent herbicide belonging to the dinitroaniline chemical family.
  • Trifluralin has a low solubility in water, and forms strong bonds with soil.
  • Trifluralin is available in granular and emulsifiable concentrate formulations.
  • The technical material is approximately 96% pure and
the emulsifiable concentrate is about 45% pure.
  • Trifluralin is a man-made chemical that looks like a yellowish-orange solid or crystal and it is odorless.
  • Trifluralin is usually used as a spray or a soil treatment in the pre-emergent control of weeds.
  • Trifluralin is a commonly used pre-emergence herbicide.
  • Trifluralin is registered for use on an immense number of food crops, most notably broccoli, cabbage, onions, a number of leafy green
vegetables, beans, tomatoes, potatoes, wheat, soybeans, sugar beet, and sugar cane.
  • Trifluralin is used to protect ornamental plants, such as trees, herbaceous plants, woody shrubs, and vines.
  • It may be used on golf courses and recreational lawns.
  • Trifuralin is a dinitroaniline compound used as a selec- tive preemergence herbicide.
  • It is licensed and used in
Yugoslavia on approx. 30% of agricultural areas.
  • Trifuralin can get into aquatic ecosystems in run and by underground waters, similar to other herbicides used near the water.
  • Trifluralin [2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-4-(trifluoromethyl)- benzenamine] ranks among the most commonly used herbicides in the United States.
  • Trifluralin has been used since 1963 for control of a variety of weeds in agronomic and horticultural crops.
  • With about 14 million pounds used in the United States in 2001, it is one of the most widely used herbicides.
  • Trifluralin is generally applied to the soil to provide control of a variety of annual grass and broadleaf weed species.
  • It inhibits root development by interrupting mitosis, and thus can control weeds as they germinate.
  • Trifluralin may be monitored in water by extraction with a solvent such as dichloromethane and quantification by gas chromatography with electron capture detection.
  • The U.S. EPA reported that trifluralin is removed with 100% effectiveness by conventional treatment using alum, sedimentation and filtration.
  •  In addition, it may be removed from drinking water by reverse
osmosis, granular activated carbon and air stripping.
  • The interim maximum acceptable concentration (IMAC) for trifluralin in drinking water is 0.045 mg/L
    (45 mg/L).
  • It is dissipated by photodecomposition, volatilization, and biodegradation.
  • Trifluralin has a high affinity for soil and is relatively immobile the half-life is 3–18 weeks, depending on soil type and geographical location.
  • Trifluralin may be extracted with dichloromethane and determined by capillary gas chromatography with a nitrogen–phosphorus detector. The method sensitivity is 0.05 μg/litre.
  • A highly sensitive immunosensor using opticalwaveguide lightmode spectroscopy (OWLS)was developed for the detection
    of the herbicide trifluralin.
  • Slow release of trifluralin to inhibit root intrusion into drip irrigation emitters is a well-known technology.
  • Trifluralin was extracted from the potting substrate and quantified using gas chromatographic techniques.
  • In the southeastern United States, during the warmer months of the growing season, trifluralin dissipates quickly in soilless substrates.
  • It is a granular combination of the dinitroaniline trifluralin for grass control, plus isoxaben for expanded broadleaf weed control.
  • Trifluralin, registered in 1963, was the first dinitroaniline herbicide.
  • It has a very low water solubility of 0.3 mg/mL, but is readily soluble in organic solvents.
  • It is susceptible to decomposition by ultraviolet irradiation and has a high vapor pressure that causes volatilization.
  • In agronomic crop production, Treflan (trifluralin) is often soil incorporated to reduce volatilization.
  • After a re-evaluation of the herbicide trifluralin, Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory
Agency (PMRA), under the authority of the Pest Control Products Act and Regulations, is
granting continued registration of products containing trifluralin for sale and use in Canada.
  • Trifluralin is a pre-emergent soil herbicide used to control annual grasses and broadleaved weeds.
  • It is registered for use in Canada on ornamentals, shelterbelts, terrestrial food/feed crops, oil seed and fibre production crops.
