Project Profile at a
Glance
- Artemisia is a large, diverse genus of plants with
about 180 species belonging to the daisy family (Asteraceae). It
comprises hardy herbs and sub-shrubs known for their volatile oils.
- They grow in temperate climates of the Northern
Hemisphere, usually in dry or semi-dry habitats. The fern-like leaves of
many species are covered with white hairs.
- It contains many well known species, such as Roman
wormwood, Sagebrush, Tarragon, Mugwort and Southernwood. The aromatic
leaves of many of these species are medicinal, some are used for
flavoring, and some are important range species. All types of wormwood
have an extremely bitter taste.
- Until recently, Artremisia annua has been grown
primarily for its aromatic foliage and its use in dried arrangements,
wreaths and potpourri. Commonly called ‘Sweet Annie'. Bend the green
stems with yellow flowers into wreath forms and dry for further
decoration.
- Artemisia annua reseeds freely and tolerates even
poor growing conditions. Currently, Artemisia annua is under
investigation for its potential use in the treatment of malaria and
other mosquito bourn diseases.
- Wormwood or Absinthe(Artemisia absinthium) is a
potent herb that has been used in various tonic wines and teas and as an
aid to digestion.
- It is also used in the bitter aperitif Campari. It
is applied as a diluted tincture, or as a strong tea, or in a compress
to heal bruises or ease the pain of falls or accidents.
- There are hundreds of growers throughout North
America that have 1/4 to 1/2 acre rows of this perennial for the dried
floral trade.
- Essential oils of A. annua can be extracted
via steam distillation in units similar to that used in the commercial
distillation of peppermint and spearmint.
- The leading suppliers to the EU were Italy, France,
Spain, Ireland, Switzerland and Germany, together supplying more than 80
percent of the imported value of medicinal &vegetable saps &
extracts by EU member countries.
- The establishment of a plant for Artemisia plant
processing for malaria and hemorrhoid medicine with a capacity of 75
tonnes per annum
