- Cabbage, one of the oldest vegetables,
continues to be a dietary staple and an inexpensive
food.
- Cabbage (Brassica oleracea L.var.
capitata) is a member
of the Brassicaceae (Mustard) family.
- Cabbage is rich in Vitamin C (an antioxidant)
and fiber and is also a member of the cruciferous vegetable family.
- With
proper management, cabbage
can produce 10 to
12 tons per acre.
- The best soil for this plant is well-fertilized, medium to heavy loams
which are well drained to a depth of 600 mm or more.
- For the best quality product, oriental cabbage requires the soil pH to
be 6.0 - 6.2.
- Bacteria naturally present on cabbage can
change it into the common fermented
food called sauerkraut.
- Fermented cabbage releases isothiocyanate from glucosinolate present
in the cabbage, which fights against cancer.
- In the treatment of leg ulcers, eczema, acne, cold sores, burns,
shingles, and chronic wounds, the application of cabbage leaves has been
used since time immemorial.
- Production costs for fresh market green cabbage are estimated at $763
per acre, with harvest and marketing costs at $1,348 per acre.
