- The
production of aluminium requires three stages—the mining of bauxite
ore,
which is refined to recover alumina, which is then smelted to make
aluminium
- Alumina is
produced from bauxite. About one tonne of alumina is produced from
three tonnes of bauxite and about one tonne of aluminium is produced
from two tonnes of alumina
- The chemical
composition of CFA is similar to bauxite ore
- Coal Fly Ash
( CFA) contains significant amounts of alumina typically, 26-31%, in
two dissimilar phases, namely amorphous and crystalline mullite,
which may be processed separately.
- Due to its
high silica content, however, CFA cannot be treated through the
Bayer process route. Therefore, a leach-sinter-leach process was
formulated that employed a two-step acid leach technique to extract
alumina from CFA using sulphuric acid.
- CFA disposal
has increasingly become an environmental concern. Most of the CFA
produced from the power plants is being disposed of in controlled
landfills or waste containment facilities
- The potential
of developing other alternative sources of alumina such as Coal Fly
Ash would provide a significant source of raw material for the local
smelters. This would cut down on alumina import costs and has the
potential to unlock large tonnage of previously unavailable raw
material.
- Hight Purity
Alumina (HPA) Market size is booming and is likely to generate
revenue of more than USD 6 billion and henceforth projecting a CAGR
of over 17% by 2024.
- Exports of
alumina increased to 15.62 lakh
tonnes in 2014-15 from 12.94 lakh tonnes in the previous year.
Exports in 2014-15 were mainly to China (41%), UAE (39%), Iran (8%)
Egypt (6%) and Bahrain (4%).
- Imports of
alumina decreased considerably to
7.90 lakh tonnes in 2014-15 from 11.69 lakh tonnes in the previous
year. Imports were mainly from Australia (86%), China (7%) and
Netherlands (4%).
- The average
price free alongside ship (f.a.s.) for U.S. imports for consumption
of metallurgical-grade alumina during the first 8 months of 2017 was
$456 per ton, 34% higher than that of the same period in 2016, and
ranged between $395 per ton and $576 per ton. World alumina
production through October 2017 increased by 13% compared withthat
of the same period in 2016.
- Approximately
94% of the alumina market is used in metallurgical applications. The
remainder, around 5.5m tonnes in 2012, is used in non-metallurgical
markets
