- Chicory is the common
name given to the flowering plants in genus Cichorium of the family
Asteraceae. There are two cultivated species, and four to six wild
species. Common chicory (Cichorium intybus) is a bushy perennial herb
with blue or lavender flowers. Originating from Europe, it was
naturalized in North America, where it has become a common roadside
plant.
- The roots are baked,
ground, and used as a coffee substitute and additive in the plant's
Mediterranean region of origin, although its use as a coffee additive is
still very popular in the American South, particularly in New Orleans.
It is a staple in Cajun-style red-eye gravy. Common chicory is also
known as blue sailors, succory, and coffeeweed.
- Chicory produces leafy
top growth and has a thick, deep taproot giving it excellent drought
tolerance and mineral extraction. Chicory has exhibited tolerance to
acidity and for this reason has been successfully grown in low pH soils.
Chicory must be rotationally grazed, therefore smaller and more
accessible paddocks are needed.
- Chicory roots are
lifted in early spring of the second year of growth, and are then dried.
The potential return per acre for chicory is higher than other crops,
such as corn. A well that can provide immediate irrigation and a steady
water supply throughout the growing period is a prerequisite for growing
chicory since chicory seeds are planted rather deep, about 1/4 to 3/8
inch.
- Very young leaves of
Chicory can be used in salads where they add a piquant bitterness and
blanched witloof can be used either in salads or as a cooked vegetable.
Traditionally the herb was used as a health tonic, especially to aid
liver function and was also applied externally to cure a range of
ailments. It was also used in love potions.
- There is a study of
effectiveness of adding chicory beta (2-1) fructans to the diet on
broiler growth performance, serum cholesterol and intestinal
characteristics. Feed with 1.0% inulin (Raftifeed® IPF, which was
obtained by extracting chicory roots with hot water. It is a beta (2-1)
fructan with chain length varying between degree of polymerization (DP)
3 to 60.
- U.S. Chicory and
Chicory USA will be the only chicory operations in the Western
Hemisphere. A Person used his own resources to build the $2 million U.S.
Chicory facility in 2001, said the new industry in western Nebraska and
eastern Wyoming has come this far because of scientists at the Panhandle
Research & Extension Center . He encouraged more study on the
alternative crop that could become a permanent benefit to the entire
area.
- Chicory USA will begin
construction soon on a $2 million manufacturing and roasting factory in
Scottsbluff which will employ in excess of 20 skilled employees. U.S.
Chicory initiated the chicory industry in the United States with the
construction of a factory and began processing. The Netherlands are the
most important exporter of chicory. The first field tests of genetically
modified inulin chicory were conducted in the Netherlands. Today there
is no genetically modified chicory on the market.
- A Group is the world
leader in the production and commercialisation of chicory based food
ingredients. Beneo™ inulin is extracted from chicory roots and is
composed of fructose chains. Inulin has good solubility and an excellent
taste profile. Beneo™ inulin and Beneo™ oligofructose are recognized
throughout the world as dietary fibres. The products which carry the
BENEO™ symbol benefit from the approval of an independent scientific
committee.
- The protocol describes
the technical procedures to be followed in order to meet the Council
Regulation 2100/94 on Community Plant Variety Rights. This protocol
applies to all varieties of Cichorium intybus L. partim of the family
Compositae, excluding industrial chicory (CPVO-TP/172/1) and leaf
chicory (UPOV-TG/154/3).
- Belgium has been a
pioneer in inulin production from chicory. Production of chicory for
inulin has remained stable for several years. It has not been possible
to obtain accurate data on the inulin production, which can be estimated
between 80,000 and 100,000 tonnes.
