  • Crude drugs play a vital role in mediation. They are obtained from various sources like plants, animals and minerals. They occur in variety of morphological forms depending on the nature of their sources.
  • When crude drugs occur of natural origin occur in the entire form their morphological and sensory characters, like shape, texture, external markings, fracture, colour, odour and taste, are of
    immense significance in their identification.
  • When drugs occur in powered form they possess very few macroscopic morphological features of identification other than some sensory characteristics like colour, odour and taste. Before sending the crude drug for sale to the market, it should be prepared properly so that its active constituent and appearance remain same and does not deteriorate before use. Preparation of crude drugs for the commercial market involves collection, drying, garbling, quality control, packaging, storage and preservation.
  • At present due to advancement in the chemical knowledge of crude drugs various methods like botanical, chemical, spectroscopic and biological methods are used for estimating active constituents present in the crude drugs in addition to its physical constants
  • Herbal material such as gums, fixed oils, essential oils, resins extracts, etc. are also extracted from plants and used separately. These materials are processed by various local procedures, such as steaming, roasting, or stir baking with honey/ alcoholic beverages/ other materials
  • The extract of natural herbs can be used in various formulations like Ayurvedic medicines, natural flavoring agents,
cosmetic ingredients and as natural ingredients in allopathic medicines.
  • It has been estimated, that in developed countries such as the US, plant drugs constitute as much as 25% of the total drugs, while in fast developing countries such as India and China, the
contribution is as much as 80%
  • About 80% of the world population is dependent on medicinal plants for health care and 20% of the pharma drugs are of plant origin, either extracted from the plants or synthetic derivatives of these plant species
