- Diketene is an
organic compound formed by dimerization of ketene. Diketene is a member
of the oxetane family. It is used as a chemical reagent in organic
chemistry. It is a colorless liquid and heating regenerates the ketene
monomer.
- Diketene is
produced
by dehydrating acetic acid at a temperature of 700 to 750 degree celcius
in the
existence of triethyl ether as a catalyst. The other method for
manufacturing
diketene is by thermolysis of acetone at a temperature of 600 to 700
degree celcius
in the presence of catalyst such as carbon disulphide. Some of the
diketene
derivatives include acetoacetates, arylamides, alkylamides, acrylic acid
esters and other diketene derivatives.
- According to
statistics, China has 22 diketene producers with an annual capacity of
more than 20 000 tons and an output of 12 600 tons. The biggest producer
is Nantong Acetic Acid Chemical Plant having an annual output of around
2 500 tons and more than 20 varieties of derivatives. Quite a few
pharmaceutical and pesticide plants have set up diketene units to
produce derivatives for their own use. There has been a great increase
in these two years in both varieties and quantities of diketene series.
The domestic demand of diketene today is estimated to be around 10 000
tons, 50% to the pharmaceutical industry and 40% to the pesticide
industry.
- The global output
of diketene is around 100 000 tons a year today. Major producers include
UCC, Eastman and FMC of the United States, Hoechst of Germany, Celanese
of Britain, Lonza of Switzerland and Synthetic Chemical Industry, Daicel
Chemical Industry and Teijin Shoji Co., Ltd. of Japan.
- The strong growth
in the pigment industry in the
developed countries such as U.S. is expected to cater demand for
diketene in the
market. The developing country such as the Asia Pacific has huge growth
potential for the pharmaceutical industries and hence is anticipated to
boost demand for diketene. China has huge production facilities for
diketene and hence it consumes huge amount of diketene for a wide
variety of applications.
- Global ketene
consumption will grow 2–3% annually during 2012-2018. The main drivers
of this growth will be China and India. China is expected to have
additional acetic anhydride and sorbic acid production, while India is
expanding in diketene derivatives
