  • Indium is a chemical element with chemical symbol In and atomic number 49.
  • This rare, soft, malleable and easily fusible poor metal is chemically similar to aluminium or gallium but more closely resembles zinc .
  • It is widely used in thin-films to form lubricated layers .It's also used for making particularly low melting point alloys, and is a component in some lead-free solders.
  • Indium is used in light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and Laser Diodes (LDs) based on compound semiconductors such as InGaN, InGaP that are fabricated by Metalorganic Vapor Phase Epitaxy (MOVPE) technology.
  • The most dominant application (78%) for indium is in the production of indium tin oxide (ITO), which is used as a coating on all types of flat-panel displays.
  • The general demand for indium chemicals, alloys and high-purity items are generally fairly steady, but the big driver for the market will be the continued increasing demand for flat-panel TVs.
  • Due to the large increase in demand for indium by the flat-panel display industry, supply has been stretched at times and hence the price has risen dramatically, from an average of US$358/kg in January 2004 to around US$1,105/kg in August 2005.
  • Consumption of indium is expected to increase throughout the next decade, especially for LCD’s, high-definition television, semiconductor materials, batteries, and low temperature solders for military and electronic applications.
  • The indium concentration both in aqueous and in the organic (TMB) phases was determined by complexometric titration (EDTA) using the xylenol orange as indicator in an acetate buffered solution at pH = 3.81 at ∼ 80◦C.
  • The extraction of Ga(III), In(III) and Tl(III) was performed with Cyanex-923 using various aromatic and aliphatic organic diluents, such as toluene, xylene, benzene, n-hexane, carbon tetrachloride, cyclohexane and chloroform.
  • Quantitative extraction of Ga(III), In(III) and Tl(III) is observed in the given pH range whereas in other cases, agents like ascorbic acid, disodium sulphate, sodium salicylate and butyl alcohol were used for quantitative extraction by the extractants, 2-ethyl hexyl phosphoric acid mono (2-ethyl hexyl) ester, Aliquat 336S, tris(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate31 and pyrazolone, respectively.
  • The metals industry has been investing in process improvements and capacity over the last few years to bring more indium and gallium to the market.
  • Prices are expected to continue to rise through 2004 to reach US$250-300/kg, an increase which is likely to encourage more widespread recovery of indium from secondary materials and widen the supply base.
  • At the end of 2002 prices were at as low as US$70/kg despite steadily increasing demand, largely due to more than adequate supplies of low-priced material from China.
  • Prices are expected to continue to rise through 2004 to reach US$250-300/kg, an increase which is likely to encourage more widespread recovery of indium from secondary materials and widen the supply base.
  • Roskill Information Services Ltd., supply potential also increased as producers increased recovery rates of indium from smelter flue dusts and residues at lead-zinc metallurgical plants to take advantage of higher prices.
