- Insulator is a
material that resists the flow of electric current. It is an object
intended to support or separate electrical conductors without passing
current through itself. An insulation material has atoms with tightly
bonded valence electrons.
- Steatite,
cordierite, forsterite, magnesium oxide and aluminum oxide are among the
wide varieties of raw materials used in the production of Du-Co ceramic
insulators. Materials are tested and monitored throughout the production
process. Production process includes Glazing, Firing, and
Finishing.
- Porcelain insulator
production for high voltage application can be made by two possible
methods. The conventional (Plastic) production process, The isostatic
(developed within PPc group) production process. While the conventional
(plastic) production process requires an operating time (for insulators
without fittings) of 7-8 weeks, the isostatic production process
requires only 1,5-2 weeks for the same insulator. The considerable time
necessary for extrusion and drying before and after profile turning – as
necessary in conventional production - is reduced to almost zero by
using isostatic production process.
- Electroporcelain and
toughened glass are the two types of insulators that are being used for
high tension transmission lines and equipment throughout the world. The
world market comprises of the power projects being set up mainly in the
under developed and developing countries using electroporcelain and
toughened glass insulators. In India also toughened glass insulators are
being used in transmission lines.
- Latest equipment
such as microprocessor controlled firing kiln, photoscanning lathes,
automatic grinding and airing machines and others available
internationally for the manufacture of HT Insulators have been installed
selectively by the industry to meet the product quality requirement.
Computerised controlled tunnel and shuttle kiln are being used by a
number of units. For firing of insulators, earlier consumption of
furnace oil was around 440 ltrs per tonne of insulators. This has been
reduced to around 230 ltrs per tonne resulting in almost 50% savings in
energy requirements.
- Regarding the
insulating behaviour of composite insulators, the property of
hydrophobicity is considered to be the most important factor. The
dynamic processes of the hydrophobicity loss and recovery and their
strong dependence on material (including basic formulation, filler, and
additives) and on processing technology are fields of continuous
optimization. Nowadays, around 95 % of insulators are manufactured with
HTV-technology.
- High-voltage
insulators used for high-voltage power transmission are made from glass,
porcelain, or composite polymer materials. Porcelain insulators are made
from clay, quartz or alumina and feldspar, and are covered with a smooth
glaze to shed dirt. The design of insulators often includes deep
grooves, or sheds, that provides increased arc-lengths. Insulators made
from porcelain rich in alumina are used where high mechanical strength
is a criterion. Glass insulators were used to suspend electrical power
lines.
- The insulators are
made from a proprietary, high-density polyethylene-based compound with a
dielectric constant compatible with polyethylene covered conductors.
They are designed to meet most of the dimensional, electrical, and
mechanical requirements of the ANSI C29.5 insulator standards, even
though this standard applies only to Wet-Process Porcelain Insulators.
These insulators can be used in any application that calls for porcelain
insulators requiring adherence to this ANSI standard.
- The UK thermal
insulation market, including building and industrial insulation, has
demonstrated strong growth over the five year review period. The market
has mainly been driven by demand for building thermal insulation in
recent years, while the development of industrial thermal insulation has
been moderate.
