• A plate is a type of dishware, being a broad, concave but mainly flat vessel on which food is served. They can also be used for ceremonial
  value.
• Plates are commonly made from ceramic materials such as bone china, porcelain and stoneware as well as other materials like plastic or glass; occasionally, wood or carved stone is used.
• Paper is a simple material. It is essentially a mat held together by a fiber’s roughness, and can be made from almost any fibrous material such as cotton, hemp, flax, wood or recycled paper.
• Paper plates are made of byproducts of the paper making process. Cellulose, oil, resin and various wood chemicals. The designation paper plates generally refers to all disposable plates. 57% of so called "paper plates" are made of polystyrene, which although not biodegradeable us much less energy to manufacture.
• Paper plates, however, refer to a polyester or vinyl plate making process that is not usually as exact as film-to-metal. Since paper images are opaque, a different process must be used to create an image usable by the press.
• The cost of plates can vary widely from plant to plant, from less than $0.80 per square foot to more than $2.00. The volume-weighted average
  price paid by the plants surveyed, adjusted for rebates, is $1.14 per square foot.
• The unit price for the plates are 3.7 cents each. The annual costs for 22 cm paper plates alone amount to $1325.52. The cost of operating a plate processor can be as high as $90,000 per year or more.
• The paper plates are capable of being recycled, the vast majority of consumers cannot recycle them because there are virtually no collection facilities that accept food-contaminated paper products for recycling.
