- Plastics and other polymeric materials
have become indispensable in our everyday lives. All these plastics
products are made from the essential polymer mixed with a complex
blend of materials known collectively as additives.
- Without additives, plastics would not
work, but with them they can be made safer, cleaner, tougher and
more colourful. Additives cost money, of course, but by reducing
production costs and making products last longer, they help us to
save money and conserve the world's precious raw material reserves.
- In fact, our world to day would be a lot
less safe, a lot more expensive and a great deal duller without the
additives that turn basic polymers in to useful
plastics.
- Thermally conductive, electrically
insulating polymer compounds can be developed using boron nitride
(BN) additives from Momentive.
- Boron nitride powders produced by
Momentive are used as additives and functional fillers that allow
for the design and manufacture of engineered plastics that possess
unique and desirable qualities.
- Accelerators are additives that, as the
name implies, accelerate or speed up the chemical reaction or the
curing of the polymers into the final plastic.
- Accelerators are also sometimes called
promoters. In rubbers accelerators are used to increase the
crosslinking reaction with sulfur in the vulcanization of
rubber.
- Global plastic additive demand has been on
the rise since level of 8.3 million tons in 2000. Plastic additives
demand in 2009 reached 11.1 million tons, and is estimated to reach
13.2 million tons in 2015, as per GBI Research’s report.
- Demand for plastics is increasing as they
offer a number of advantages over other materials in growing sectors
like automobiles and construction.
- The global market for plastics additives
and barrier coatings is set to grow at a compound annual growth rate
(CAGR) of 4.6% to total $752m (€586.2) by 2014, according to a new
report from Pira International.
- In terms of geographical area, growth
rates in western Europe and North American are slower than the
global average.
- The highest growth rates are in China and
India – more than 10%.
- In 2009, Asia Pacific took the largest
share of the additives and barrier market (42%), followed by North
America (24.5%), western Europe (19.9%), central and eastern Europe
(5.4%), South America (3.9%) and the rest of the world (4.3%).
- Animal research at the University of
Alabama at Birmingham is resurrecting cancer concerns about a
plastic additive commonly used in consumer products, including baby
bottles, water bottles and the linings of cans.
