Project at a Glance Contents on the CD ROM
  • A pavement material which is obtained by blending the crumb rubber (produced from recycled scrap tires) into liquid asphalt  that results in extremely high performance binder used in paving process.
  • The trade names are Asphalt Rubber, Rubberized Asphalt and Rubberized Asphalt Concrete (RAC).
  • In 1960, Asphalt rubber was first developed in Arizona and also has 35years of use in California.
  • It creates a roadway that is
significantly more durable, longer lasting, quieter and safer than roads paved with conventional asphalt.
  • Research shows that by using of Asphalt Rubber nearly 50 to 75% of noise levels is reduced.
  • Techniques for incorporating rubber into asphalt are wet process and dry process.
  • Rubberized modified asphalt (RMA) is a wet process method & Asphalt Rubber is a dry process method.
  • In simple terms, wet process adds the rubber into the asphalt cement binder to allow a chemical reaction of
the two, while the dry process includes rubber in the aggregate of the paving material during mixing.
  • When compared to conventional asphalt, it is more durable, skid resistant , reduces traffic noise and provides a smooth, quiet ride.
  • The asphalt market uses ground rubber to modify the asphalt binder used in road paving, resulting in more durable roads.
  • Depending on the application selected, between 500 and 2,000 scrap tires can be used in each
lane mile of pavement. This means that for a one-mile section of a four-lane highway, anywhere
between 2,000 and 8,000 tires can be used in creating a safer, quieter, longer-lasting road.
  • The largest individual rubberized asphalt concrete consumer in California  which is required  to increase the percentage of all flexible pavements that use rubberized asphalt concrete to 25 percent by 2010 and 35 percent by 2013.
  • Unit Price for rubber modified asphalt us 20% more than conventional asphalt concrete.
  • A road surface that will not crack as readily as other surfaces, a desirable feature in a desert setting.
  • Foremost reason to pick the asphalt rubber is that it holds up better to extreme temperature changes.
  • Not only used as paving material and also used as lake liner because of excellent water proofing quality.
  • When it used as Seal Coat, it is referred to as a Stress Absorbing Membrane.
  • The Overall performance of Asphalt Rubber has been good by providing benefits includes thinner overlays and improved wet weather safety.
