- Brinjal is one
of the most common principle vegetable in most parts of the
world.
- Eggplant (US,
Australia), aubergine (UK), or brinjal (South Asia and South
Africa) is a plant species in the nightshade family Solanaceae.
Solanum melongena is grown worldwide for its edible fruit. Most
commonly purple, the spongy, absorbent fruit is used in various
cuisines.
- Brinjal/Egg
plant/Aubergine is native to the Indian subcontinent, and the
Portuguese traded it to Europe (either directly from India or
through the Arabs) and cultivated it there. The Europeans
started calling it egg-plant because they resembled goose eggs
(they may have received the pale yellowish versions).
- The gaps
between demand and supply are primarily due to ineffective
market links and lack of consolidation on both the demand-side
and supply-side. On the supply side, the government has agenda
to promote modern cultivation practices, lower input costs and
most importantly to counter fragmentation of farm lands by
promoting FPOs (Farmer Produce Organisations) for collaborative
farming. FPOs are commercial enterprises formed by partnering a
minimum of 1000 farmers.
- Based on
averages and principal component analysis, six genotypes
(BCB-30, Deshi Makra, Gujrat Brinjal Round, 09/BRBWRes-3,
BCB-10, 10/BRRVar-2) appeared to be promising donors for use in
export oriented breeding programme.
- Globally, China
is the largest producer of eggplant followed by India
- India grows
various varieties of eggplants, including high yielding
varieties and hybrid varieties.
- The major
eggplant producing states are West Bengal, Odisha, Gujarat,
Madhya Pradesh and Bihar.
- The main
countries from which EU imports eggplant include Turkey, Kenya,
Dominican Republic and Uganda
- EU imports more
eggplant from ASEAN countries such as Thailand177 and Malaysia
compared to India and China, although their share in global
production is very low.
- India needs to
move towards safe agricultural practices and organic farming
