Acrylic plastic refers to a family of synthetic, or man-made, plastic materials containing one or more derivatives of acrylic acid. The most common acrylic plastic is polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), which is sold under the brand names of Plexiglas, Lucite, Perspex, and Crystallite. Acrylic is a useful, clear plastic that resembles glass, but has properties that make it superior to glass in many ways. Acrylic is a lightweight, colorless thermoplastic. It is hard, rigid and glassy at room temperature. It is especially noted for being colorless and highly transparent, having excellent weathering characteristics and being easy to maintain. Acrylic, however, offers strength and flexibility for larger viewing panels, a greater variety of shapes, increased clarity, and more integrity and safety. Acrylic sheets have excellent light transmission. Clearer than glass! Will not yellow after prolonged sun exposure. Acrylic can be designed to withstand the worst case impact loading condition, where under such an impact, the acrylic will suffer only cosmetic damage. There are two basic types of acrylic: extruded and cell cast. Extruded or "continuous cast" acrylic is made by a less expensive process, is softer, can scratch easier and may contain impurities. Cell cast acrylic is a higher quality acrylic and U.S. domestic cell cast is a good choice for applications that require the best. Imported cell cast acrylic is often manufactured to lesser standards. Each technique offers unique benefits from cost and physical properties to variety of color and finish. Depending on the fabricator’s needs, one type may be more appropriate than another. Acrylic plastic polymers are formed by reacting a monomer, such as methyl methacrylate, with a catalyst. A typical catalyst would be an organic peroxide. The catalyst starts the reaction and enters into it to keep it going, but does not become part of the resulting polymer Acrylic sheet is commonly manufactured by one of three techniques: Extruded Acrylic Sheet, Continuous Cast Acrylic Sheet, Cell Cast Acrylic Sheet. Acrylic is used to make various products, such as shower doors, bath enclosures, windows and skylights. Statistics show that 2007 was another strong year for MMA. Global demand increased by over 5% to 2.9mmtes; the highest growth came from Asia with Europe also contributing a strong performance.
