- Capsule Endoscopy is
a term used to describe a miniature capsule used to record images
through the digestive tract for use in medicine.
- The capsule, also
known as a capsule camera or video pill or PillCam or EndoCapsule or
Sayaka, is a camera with the size and shape of a pill used to visualize
the gastrointestinal tract. Capsule endoscopy has other names such as
Wireless capsule endoscopy, Miniature Ingestible Capsule.
- Capsule Endoscopy
involved ingesting a small capsule, which contains a colour camera,
batter, light source and transmitter. The camera takes two pictures
every second for eight hours, transmitting images to a data recorder
about the size of a portable CD player that patients wear around the
waist.
- Capsule endoscopy
(CE) is a developing technique of gastrointestinal endoscopy which began
to be used after becoming officially available by getting the FDA
license in 2001.
- The capsule
endoscope is developed and currently available only by Given Diagnostic
Imaging System. Capsule endoscopy utilizes a wireless video camera small
enough to swallow to perform painless endoscopic imaging of the small
intestine.
- Capsule endoscopy is
ideal for the search of gastrointestinal bleeding in patients who had
undergone standard examinations but no specific conclusion could be
made. The capsule has the ability to obtain high resolution images and
doesn’t require big preparations and doesn’t cause
discomfort.
- Capsule endoscopy is
a significant technical breakthrough for the investigation of the small
bowel, and yet recently the esophagus. The CE has the potential for use
in a wide range of patients with a variety of illnesses and the studies
on the uses of this device is very fresh. In future, with the coming new
products and competitive companies, the abilities and the effectiveness
of the system will be improved.
- CE is now accepted
as the optimal diagnostic technology for patients with “obscure” GI
bleeding (OGIB), defined as bleeding from a source that is not detected
by colonoscopy and esophagogastroduodenoscopy.
- The basic equipment
for CE requires an investment of about US$29,000, and its effectiveness
is directly related to the ability to accurately make the diagnosis
based on reading of the 50,000 images gathered in traversing the small
bowel.
- Capsule endoscopy is
used as a less-invasive procedure in placement of a traditional
endoscope, which is a long, thin tube inserted into the rectum and
transversed through the colon or into the oral cavity. The technology is
used by gastroenterologists to detect diseases such as Crohn's disease,
gastric ulcers, and colon cancer.
- At the present time,
the capsule camera is primarily used to visualize the small intestine.
Whereas the upper gastrointestinal tract (esophagus, stomach, and
duodenum) and the colon (large intestine) can be very adequately
visualized with scopes (cameras placed at the ends of thin flexible
tubes), the small intestine is very long (average 20-25 feet) and very
convoluted.
