- Bioethanol production
results in a co-product, distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS)
that is used in the
animal feed industry
- The high energy,
protein, and
phosphorus content of DDGS make it a very attractive partial
replacement for some of the more expensive
traditional energy (corn), protein (soybean meal), and phosphorus
(mono- or dicalcium phosphate) ingredients
used in animal feeds.
- When ethanol plants
make ethanol, they use only starch from corn and grain sorghum. The
remaining nutrients - protein, fiber and oil - are the by-products
used to create livestock feed called dried distillers grains with
solubles.
- For every 3.8 liters
of ethanol produced, 2.4 kg of DDGS is produced without the use of
corn oil extraction. However, with corn oil extraction, DDGS yield
is reduced by approximately 0.06 kg per liter of ethanol produced,
representing a 9.4% reduction in DDGS yield.
- A variety of
feedstocks are used to produce ethanol and DDGS around the world.
- Since the nutrient
composition of grains used to produce ethanol varies, the nutrient
composition of the resulting distiller’s grains also varies
- Corn DDGS is a very
good source of protein for dairy cows
