- Dimethyl sulfoxide
(DMSO) is the chemical compound with the formula (CH3)2SO.
- Dimethyl sulfoxide is a
by-product of wood pulping.
- DMSO is an important
polar aprotic solvent.
- Dimethyl sulfoxide
dissolves a variety of organic substances, including carbohydrates,
polymers, peptides, as well as many inorganic salts and gases.
- Dimethyl Sulfoxide is a
Sulphuric Compound originally used as an industrial solvent.
- Dimethyl sulphoxide
(DMSO) is a clear, colorless to yellowish liquid with a characteristic
bitter odour and taste.
- It is soluble in water,
ethanol, acetone, diethyl ether, benzene and chloroform and is a good
solvent for unsaturated, nitrogen-containing and aromatic compounds;
saturated aliphatics are essentially insoluble in it.
- DMSO is produced
naturally by the processes of nature -- somewhere between 20 and 60
billion pounds of DMSO are produced by nature every year.
- DMSO is made by
processing the waste product of paper making.
- DMSO combines readily
with Hydroxyl Free Radicals, forming Dimethyl Sulphoxone in the process,
it effectively neutralizes these Free Radicals and the body excretes
them.
- DMSO is metabolized to
dimethyl sulfone and dimethly sulfide and is excreted in urine and
feces.
- The ‘‘activated DMSO’’
can suffer an elimination, resulting in the highly reactive H2C¼S(ž)-CH3
species that can react with the alcohol, yielding a methylthiomethyl
ether 13 as a side compound.
- DMSO can be efficiently
recovered by distillation from mixtures with water and other
impurities.
- DMSO is used in PCR to
inhibit secondary structures in the DNA template or the DNA
primers.
- In cryobiology DMSO has
been used as a cryoprotectant and is still an important constituent of
cryoprotectant vitrification mixtures used to preserve organs, tissues,
and cell suspensions.
- DMSO is commonly used
in veterinary medicine as a liniment for horses, alone or in combination
with other ingredients.
- DMSO has been used to
reduce the harm caused by pulling and/or wrenching muscles, or injuries
caused by crushing.
- DMSO has also been used
successfully as a solvent for antifungal drugs in the treatment of
ringworm.
- A Convenient technique
is described for assignment of amide proton resonances in water.
Starting with the proton magnetic resonance (PMR)
assignments of
oxytocin and lysine-vasopressin (Lys-VP) (2) in dimethylsulfoxide
(Me2SO).
- The use of DMSO
reduction method as a sensitive and reliable tool to measure microbial
activity in freshwater systems is evaluated. This method is
a
nonradiolabeling, relatively inexpensive technique that allows rapid
analysis of a sample.
- There is only one
manufacturer of DMSO in the United States -- there are many others
around the world.
