- Ducks are raised in
sheds which vary from naturally ventilated (open-sided) sheds to
fully enclosed climate controlled tunnel ventilated houses.
- So, Commercial duck
meat production is a full-time specialized business which
requires significant investment in both time and money.
- The Australian
industry processes 8 million birds annually and is worth an
estimated amount of $100 million.
- The major breeds
available for meat production in Australia are Pekin, Mallard ducks,
Muscovy, Aylesbury, Runner and Rouen and crosses of these breeds.
The Pekin duck (Anas Domesticus) is the one predominant breed which
is used for meat production in Australia.
- Similar to chicken
meat operations, the capital
investment and development costs for duck
farming depends on some factors, including Land prices, Size of the
enterprise, Service and Infrastructure, Application requirements and
Design considerations.
- For a duck plant of
the size indicated 10 acres of land should be ample.
- In figuring on the
amount of housing required for this number of breeding ducks, it is
necessary to figure on 2-1/2 to 3 square feet of floor space per
bird, 3 square feet being better than 2-1/2.
- This would require a
housing space 20 feet deep by 120 feet long.
- An adequate water
supply is must. This will consist of a well or spring furnishing an
ample amount of water, a power pump and a water supply tank. And
also make sure to provide adequate heating, especially if you are
rearing ducklings.
- Investment in the
business exclusive of working capital, i.e., the money in the land
and buildings and other equipment would require under present
conditions about $1,000 for each thousand ducks marketed.
- In other words, in a
plant of this size, close to $30,000 would be invested.
- Make your farm not
smaller than 3.5 to 4 sq. ft for every duck as this will give enough
space for the ducks to move freely.
- As they grow, they
need more space, so better plan to build a shelter that will not
hinder their movement as they are growing.
- Maintain enough number
of ducks in a coop as this will reflect good output during the
harvest time.
- Seafood like shrimps,
fishes, clamps, shells etc. are the most common and very nutritious
food for ducks.
- However if these are
not available, you may give them a combination of feeds and chicken
laying mass.
- To increase their egg
production, give your egg laying ducks with supplementary feed.
- It is said that more
than 22 million ducks are being raised in the US each year.
