All gas discharge lamps, including fluorescent lamps, require a ballast
to
operate. The ballast provides a high initial voltage to initiate the
discharge, then rapidly limits the lamp current to safely sustain the
discharge -
Electronic ballasts are universally known to provide more stress-free
working environments, attributed to their steady flicker-free light,
besides other nice features like instant-start, the more recent
auto-dimming capability, and power-factor correction.
-
Fluorescent ballasts are manufactured for three primary types of
fluorescent lamps: preheat, rapid start, and instant start
- Electronic
ballasts are more efficient than magnetic ballasts in the operation of
fluorescent lamps
- HID ( High Intensity Discharge ) lamps require
specific ballasts to regulate current and deliver the proper voltage to
the arc
- Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps (CCFLs), Compact Fluorescent
Lamps (CFLs), High -Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps, Linear Fluorescent,
Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) and Halogens all compete complement one
another within the $10 billion electronic ballast market
- Annual
worldwide ballast sales - 90 million units/year ( both for new &
replacement)
- Sales for ballasts is likely to grow at an average
annual rate of 12% from 2008 to 2010
