- Dried mangoes can
make use of the energy in the fructose at a time when food is short.
When there are many mangoes they are difficult to sell so many are
wasted. If they are dried, they can be eaten later.
- Drying fruit is
cheap, simple and very effective. Using the power of the sun, a
solar dryer can dry almost any fruit and many vegetables. The sun
evaporates the moisture content of the food meaning if they are then
stored correctly, dried fruit can last for years.
- Dried mango is an
important value added product; made by dehydrating mango slices or
mango pulp.
- Dried mango products
are popular in the world. There are different types of products
available in this category.
- Dried mango is made
by cutting mango slices and drying those in solar and/or fuel fired
dehydrators. Another variation of the product is called mango
leather which is made by making mango pulp and drying the pulp.
- Dried mango powder is
a spice made by grinding dried mango. The powder preserves the
acidic, tart and spicy flavor of unripe mangoes.
- Dried mango powder
has high iron content, so pregnant women and people suffering from
anemia are advised to consume it regularly. It combats acidity and
improves digestion. It is a fair source of Vitamin A and Vitamin E
which helps hormonal system function efficiently.
- All the major mango
producing countries produce and export dried mango products. There
is demand of this product in local market also; which is shown by
its sale in large retail stores in the major cities of the country.
- Dried mangoes are
produced with very simple equipment. The most important equipment in
making dried mangoes is the dryer.
- For dried mangoes,
the drying phase makes up the bulk of the processing time. In some
companies, this
can take from 8 to 24 hours. Dryers can have a capacity of up to 1
ton. During peak months, the bottleneck of the process tends to be
in the drying phase.
- The price of dried
mangoes from Thailand is almost 80% cheaper
than the dried mangoes from the Philippines. It must be because
fresh mangoes are cheaper in Thailand.
- Dried mango is sold
in dices (varying sizes depending on buyer specifications),
granules, chunks,
slices, spears (usually 1/8 of a fruit). Color is generally
yellowish orange. Slices for most fruits are generally 3/4 or 4/5 mm
thick.
- The market for dried
mangoes
is huge, and the demand for the product is growing fast, it’s seen
as a possible way of pushing a bigger portion of the local
production onto the market.
