- Phellinus linteus
(PL), a mushroom growing well on mulberry tree, is well know fungus
of the genus phellinus in the family Hymenochaetaceae and has been
used as a traditional herb medicine for years in oriental countries.
- PL is also called Sang
Huang in Chinese medicine is a promising natural anti-cancer
mushroom.
- P.Linteus extracts
exhibit anti-tumor properties on skin, lung, breast and prostrate
cancer cells.
- PL markedly inhibited
the early event in angiogenesis, capillary morphogenesis of the
human aortic endothelial cells, through the down regulation of
secretion of vascular endothelial growth factor from the breast
cancer cells.
- PL can suppress
cellular events associated with cancer promotion by preventing the
inhibition of gap juncational intercellular communication induced by
hydrogen peroxide.
- In the traditional
medicine, it has been known to posses curing effect against stomach
aches, inflammation and tumors and also used to improve overall
health and prevent various diseases such as gastroenteric disorders
and lymphatic disease.
- The research found
that an extract from the phellinus linteus mushroom reduced
growth of new cancer cells and blocked new tumour feeding blood
vessels.
- It is used as an
ingredient in skin creams because it is believed to rejuvenate the
skin.
- It grows only in deep
in the forest and high up in mountains and can live for tens of
years.
- It grows naturally in
trunks of willow, paper mulberry and elm tree that is more than
100years old, and shall grow for minimum 30 to 40 years to make a
fruit body being used for medical application.
- The process of
fermenting a strain of phellinus linteus fungus, in which the fungus
is incubated in a medium under the condition for the best yield
control with the aim to obtain the best yield of mycelia and
poly-saccharides.
- Polysaccharides
extracted from the phellinus linteus mushroom possess antitumour
activity.
- It might be of use in
immunochemotherapy of cancer because of its effective activities on
tumor growth and metastasis through the immuno-potentiation of the
patients without toxicity.
- News of the mushroom's
medicinal properties began reaching the outside world in the 1970s,
when studies concerning phellinus linteus were published in the
Japanese and Chinese scientific press.
- A Polysaccharide
isolated from phellinus linteus has recently been reported to
inhibit the development of autoimmune diabetes in non-obese diabetic
mice.
