- Sida cordifolia
known as 'ilima, is an erect to prostrate perennial herb or subshrub
that grows to 0.2 to 1.5 m tall.
- Sida is a genus of
125 to 150 species of tropical and subtropical regions of the world,
from the Pacific Islands to Hawaii. 'Ilima has a
series of similar
forms common to all islands but also exhibits morphological variation
from island to island.
- The botanical name
of bala is Sida cordifolia and it belongs to family Malvaceae
- Sida Cordifolia is
considered to have diaphoretic, diuretic, central nervous system
stimulating and anti-asthmatic properties.
- Bala is sweet in
taste. Sweet in the post digestive effect .
- Sida cordifolia is
related to Ma-huang (Ephedra) and is native to India, where it has been
used in Ayurvedic medicine for at least 2000 years.
- The stem of this
plant contains a number of active compounds, including small amounts of
an essential oil, and most important, 1-2% alkaloids composed mainly of
ephedrine and pseudoephedrine, with ephedrine ranging from 30-90%,
depending on the source
- Constituents include
ephedrine (1%), phytosterols and potassium nitrate.
- Ephedrine is a
sympathomimetic amine - that is, its principal mechanism of action
relies on its direct and indirect actions on the adrenergic receptor
system, which is part of the sympathetic nervous system or
SNS.
- Sida cordifolia is
used in the treatment of leucorrhoea, gonorrhea, general debility and
rheumatism.
