- A UV Varnish is a liquid coating that is
applied to the surface of a sheet (available in Gloss, Matt and Silk
finishes) which is then dried / cured under an ultra violet light.
- Varnishing is one of the best methods
available to greatly enhance the appearance of a printed sheet and
after applying a UV varnish you can instantly see the difference.
- The vibrancy of any underlying colour will
have dramatically increased, creating a great first impression and
make your print or product more likely to be retained.
- It can also help protect the underlying
print, acting as a physical barrier preventing additional set off
and marking.
- UV Varnishing is so popular in todays
print market that you can see its use and the value that is brings
in every aspect of the industry. So whether its an overall coating
or a spot effect that you are looking for make sure that you
incorporate it into your print and get the most from this visually
stunning technology.
- Due to the normally high solids content of
UV coating/varnish the surface of the cured film can be extremely
reflective and glossy. 80 text and heavier weights of paper can be
UV coated, however, cover weights are preferred. UV can be used on
smooth, uncoated papers.
- Special varnishes dry almost straight away
if they are exposed to ultra violet light. (UV light).
- The varnish is sprayed on to the paper /
card in the same way as other varnishes. However, after spraying the
card passes underneath UV lights which dries the varnish almost
instantaneously.
- One disadvantage is that this type of
machinery is expensive to purchase. However, it produces an
excellent gloss finish to the card / paper.
- Varnish is applied to card packaging in
order to give it a gloss finish. It offers little protecting to the
package and usually applied to give a ‘shine’ to the card.
- The UV cationic varnishes used for the
external protection of the container are applied under the same
conditions as the solvent-borne conventional varnishes, without any
problem of transfer of odours and/or flavours for "reverse side
contact" - i.e. transfer onto the internal side of the sheets during
their stacking (tests carried out on the sheets from industrial
production have confirmed the same performance as solvent-borne
conventional varnishes).
- The substrate has a very delicate role for
this kind of UV varnish application; the substrate can be either the
blank metal-sheet or the metal-sheets coated with a
solvent-borne basecoat and/or size used as a prime coat. The
interfilm adhesion between inks, prime coats and substrate is of
great importance in the use of UV
varnishes.
- The varnishing system (on regular or
“scrolled” sheets), requires the application of UV varnish directly
onto the metal, followed by the application, on the other side of
the sheets, of a solvent-borne internal lacquer, normally dried for
12 minutes at a temperature of 190°C-200°C.
