Information Profile @ a glance
- Avocado is an evergreen fruit tree of the flowering plant family
Lauraceae
- Avocados can be grown on a wide range of soils, but they are
extremely sensitive to
poor drainage and cannot withstand water-logging. They are intolerant to
saline conditions.
- In India, avocado is not a commercial fruit crop. In a very limited
scale it is grown in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra, Karnataka in the
south-central India and in the eastern Himalayan state of Sikkim. It can
not tolerate the hot dry winds and frosts of northern India.
Climatically, it is grown in tropical or semitropical areas experiencing
some rainfall in summer, and in humid, subtropical summer rainfall
areas.
- The varieties that are cultivated in India go by several names, such
as Purple, Green, Fuerte, Pollock, Peradeniya Purple Hybrid, Trapp,
Round and Long
- Many people think avocados are green vegetables, but they are indeed
fruits.
- There are more than eighty different varieties but the Hass avocado
is the most common. The skin of Hass avocados turn a dark purple-black
when ripe.
- Avocado is one of the 20 highest selling fresh fruits in the world
- Monounsaturated fat is a fatty acid that helps lower LDL (bad)
cholesterol and boosts HDL (good) cholesterol.* Research suggests that
the fat in avocados also increases the body’s ability to absorb and use
antioxidants.
- The five most important international markets for avocados are the
USA (29.7%), France (21%), Holland (6.3%), the UK (6.1%) and Japan
(5.9%). Currently, the main importers of Peruvian avocados are Spain,
the UK and France while other markets that pose great potential are
Holland, Japan, Colombia and Australia.
- Avocado oil has a higher heat tolerance than olive oil in cooking,
meaning it doesn’t spit or burn as quickly. It is healthy and tasty for
use on salads, pastas, vegetables, grilled foods and
dipping bread. It has great benefits in relieving minor sunburn,
moisturizing dry and aging skin and as a massage oil base
- Established orchards with the necessary post harvest infrastructure
to produce and pack fruit for specific export markets, have enabled
tropical fruits to compete at the upper end of the market, maximizing
earnings through the sales
of fresh fruit in a segment where unit prices are
at a premium and contributing to the rapid
rise in trade values
