- Chlorination of
wastewater is the application of chlorine to a wastewater accomplish
some definite purpose.
- Chlorine may be
applied in two general ways, gaseous and liquid.
- In general, the
effective chemical form of chlorine that either destroys the microbe
or acts against odor, etc. is the same.
- Gaseous forms of
chlorine are generally first dissolved in water prior to addition to
the wastewater stream
- While liquid forms of
chlorine (called hypochlorites)
- The are sold in the
form of water soluble salts.
- Because chlorine gas
generally costs less than hypochlorites,
- It is normally used in
treatment plants except in rare instances where only a relatively
small amount of chlorine is needed
- The application of
chlorine is usually controlled by special devices which are known as
chlorinators,
- Chlorinizers or by
similar names.
- Chlorination
disinfects your well by destroying unhealthy bacteria and
microorganisms and removing dissolved iron, manganese and hydrogen
sulfide.
- It can be
managed easily at home with common household bleach
- Continuous
chlorination of a private water supply can be done by various
methods.
- The injection device
should operate only when water is being pumped, and the water pump
should shut off if the chlorinator fails or if the chlorine supply
is depleted
- Chlorination is also
used to sanitize the water in swimming pools and as a disinfection
stage in sewage treatment.
- In order to combat
waterborne diseases, different disinfection methods are used to
inactivate pathogens.
- Along with other water
treatment processes such as coagulation, sedimentation, and
filtration, chlorination creates water that is safe for public
consumption
- Chlorine is obtained
commercially from salt water by electrolysis.
- In this project,
photovoltaic power was applied to an electrolysis cell to produce
liquid chlorine for the purpose of sanitization in swimming pools.
- Tests were conducted
to investigate the effect of applied voltage, current, salt level,
water flow rate, and duration of chlorination
- A chlorination cell
consisting of anti-corrosive plates is installed within a sealed un
t in the pump line,
- So that when the
pump is operating salt water flows through the plates and is
electrolyzed.
- Wastewater
chlorination is widely practiced to reduce microbial contamination
and potential disease risks to exposed populations
- Chlorine is the water
treatment of choice because it is efficient, economical and easy to
use.
- Moreover, drinking
water chlorination ensures the presence of a residual disinfectant
throughout the water distribution system from the treatment plant to
the consumer's tap.
- Chlorination
effectively destroys many disease-causing bacteria and viruses.
- In addition chlorine
is easy to control and is an inexpensive chemical to apply to rural
surface or ground water treatment systems
