Information profile @ a Glance
- Chlorine Dioxide (CIO2) is an oxidising biocide. It
kills micro-organisms (bacteria, viruses and spores) by attacking and
penetrating their cell wall, disrupting the transport of nutrients
across the cell wall and inhibiting protein synthesis. Since this action
occurs regardless of the metabolic state of the organism, oxidising
biocides such as Chlorine Dioxide are very effective against dormant
organisms and spores
- Over 95% of the chlorine dioxide produced in the
world today is made from sodium chlorate and is used for pulp bleaching.
It is produced with high efficiency by reducing sodium chlorate in a
strong acid solution with a suitable reducing agent such as methanol,
hydrogenperoxide, hydrochloric acid or sulfur dioxide. Modern
technologies are based on methanol or hydrogen peroxide, as these
chemistries allow the best economy and do not co-produce
elemental chlorine.
- Chlorine dioxide produces no organic, chlorine
compounds with those contaminants most frequently found in water, e.g.
Chloro phenols or halogenated Hydrocarbons . The compounds formed from
the reaction of Chlorine dioxide with organic water contaminants are
therefore largely negligible in terms of sensory or toxicity
considerations. This makes Chlorine dioxide an ideal disinfectant for
the treatment of drinking water and process water or for circuit water
systems. Chlorine dioxide is effective against
water bacteria, viruses, cryptosporidium, giardia, botulism. e.coli. &
cholera.
- There is a new technology, which delivers chlorine
dioxide in a safe, stable, easy-to-use powder. The powder features a
patented, controlled sustained-release mechanism that allows precise
control of the concentration, strength and rate of release of chlorine
dioxide. This capability enables the expanded use of the powerful
biocide to a wide variety of applications previously deemed impractical.
- The powders can be custom formulated to deliver
different levels of chlorine dioxide and to release the biocide at
specific rates. For solution applications, the product is available in
dissolvable tablets and sachets.
- Tablets also can be used in residential swimming
pools. These tablets are EPA-registered to treat white water mold and
pink slime, both of which grow in the plumbing systems of pools.
- Tablets and sachets used in solutions are designed to
begin releasing chlorine dioxide up to five minutes after being combined
with water and to continue releasing the biocide for up to two hours.
Powders designed for dry applications offer a wider range of controlled
release parameters. All of the powders release
chlorine dioxide independent of solution pH and volume. After the
biocide is activated, the material safely reduces into common salts.
