- Chlorpyrifos is a
toxic crystalline organophosphate insecticide that inhibits
acetylcholinesterase and is used to control insect pests.
- Trade names include
Dursban (home and garden uses) and Lorsban (agricultural
uses).
- Chlorpyrifos belongs
to a class of insecticides known as organophosphates.
- The crops with the
most intense chlorpyrifos use are cotton, corn, almonds, and fruit trees
including oranges and apples.
- Chlorpyrifos can
kill insects by direct contact or ingestion. Chlorpyrifos kills insects
by disrupting their normal nervous system functions.
- Chlorpyrifos
disrupts the nervous system by phosphorylating the active site of the
acetylcholinesterase enzyme, rendering it inactive.
- People can be
exposed to chlorpyrifos by direct dermal contact, contact with treated
surfaces, ingestion of chlorpyrifos contaminated dust, and
by
breathing air inside or outside treated buildings or near fields
where it was applied.
- Chlorpyrifos is
moderately to very highly toxic to birds, honeybees, fish, and aquatic
organisms.
- Chlorpyrifos has
been one of the pesticides most used worldwide since 1965.
- Chlorpyrifos is an
irreversible inhibitor of cholinesterase (ChE), and inhibition of ChE is
believed to be the most sensitive effect in all animal species evaluated
and in humans.
- Chlorpyrifos (CPF)
and diazinon (DZN) are inhibitors of acetylcholinesterase due to the
effects of their active oxygen analogs.
- Chlorpyrifos is an
organophosphate insecticide, acaricide and miticide used to control
foliage and soil-borne insect pests on a variety of food and feed
crops.
- Diazinon and
chlorpyrifos are commonly found in consumer and commercial products
marketed for urban uses. These uses are generally related to lawn/garden
care, indoor pest control, and pet care products.
- Chlorpyrifos and
other organophosphates such as diazinon have immediate, direct
inhibitory actions on DNA synthesis and hence on neural
cell
replication, with preferential targeting of gliotypic cells. The active
metabolite, chlorpyrifos oxon, is less effective than chlorpyrifos,
indicating that the antimitotic effects are separable from inhibition of
cholinesterase.
- Approximately 10
million pounds are applied annually in agricultural settings. The
largest agricultural market for chlorpyrifos in terms of total pounds ai
is corn (~5.5 million).
- In agricultural
applications, chlorpyrifos is registered to control a broad range of
insect pests across many crops. In domestic and commercial settings it
is registered for the control of pests such as termites, fleas and
cockroaches.
- Chlorpyrifos is a
broad-spectrum organophosphate insecticide. It is registered for use in
Australia for crop protection and pest control.
